The Ronin Series
The Ronin Series is an evolving collection of drawings that explore the fallen Samurai—warriors stripped of rank, armour, and honour. These works are primarily small, rough pencil studies, each one marked by a minimal splash of colour that hints at what once was. In contrast to the ornate splendour of the Samurai and Shogun pieces, the Ronin appear raw and unadorned, reflecting their descent from revered soldiers to wandering outcasts.
My fascination with medieval Japan has been lifelong, especially my admiration for the artisans who crafted Samurai armour, the kabuto helmets, and the expressive mempo masks. Their creations—both beautiful and fearsome—continue to inspire me. This body of work is not a reproduction of any specific historical armour; rather, it is a personal interpretation of the artistry, symbolism, and spirit embedded in these extraordinary objects.
The full series is divided into three interconnected parts:
Shoguns
Large oil paintings on specially treated paper, each one commanding and ceremonial.
Samurai
A diverse collection of drawings ranging from 6×9 works in ink, pencil, and acrylics, to 18×24 colour‑pencil pieces, and others exceeding that scale.
Ronin
Mixed‑media drawings—ink, chalk, pencil, conte, and more—typically created in two colours. Their frantic, stripped‑down mark‑making reflects the Ronin’s status as former Samurai forced to survive on the fringes of society, begging or preying upon the public they once served.

My love for these works of art has led me to a series of paintings and drawings inspired by the artistic talent incorporated in the development of these beautiful and terrifying adornments of war.
These images were inspired by and not images of any existing armor that I know of.The series is split into 3 parts: Shoguns, Samurai and Ronin.
The Shoguns are all large oil paintings on a specially treated paper.
The Samurai exists as a collection of drawings of varies sizes - 6x9 (ink, pencil & acrylics, 18x24 ‘‘‘(colour pencils), and larger than 18x24.
Ronan are usually created in 2 colours, frantically drawing to represent the outlaw, outcast figures who were once proud Samurai now shunned by a public who they begged from or preyed upon for their survival.
mixed media (ink, chalk, pencil, conte crayon etc.).
Over the coming months much more is to come concerning this body of work if you ‘d like subscribe to to receive updates concerning new image releases in this series, Click to Subscribe.
